The History of Tango Dance Classes

The Birth of Tango

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Argentina saw a huge wave of immigration. European, African, and local Argentine people mixed their cultures, creating a unique blend of music and dance. This melting pot gave rise to tango, a dance that expressed their deep feelings of loss and longing for their homelands.
Tango started in the rough neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, where young men called compatriots, mostly poor and of mixed backgrounds, danced in bars, dance halls, and brothels. Initially, tango was seen as a dance of people with low incomes.
Despite the high society’s initial disdain, tango spread quickly. By the early 20th century, it had become a popular dance and music form in Buenos Aires.

Tango Goes Global

The global tango spread began in the early 1900s when wealthy Argentine families’ sons introduced it to Paris. The Parisians, always eager for new and exciting trends, fell in love with it. By 1913, tango had become an international sensation. The Argentine elite, who had once looked down on it, began to embrace it with pride. By the 1930s, during Argentina’s Golden Age, tango became a key part of Argentine culture.

Decline and Revival

In the 1950s, political repression in Argentina pushed tango underground. The rise of rock & roll further contributed to its decline. However, in the mid-1980s and 1990s, shows like “Tango Argentino” and “Forever Tango” toured the world, including Broadway, sparking a revival.
Over the years, many films have featured this beautiful dance. In 2009, the United Nations declared Argentine Tango music and dance part of the world’s cultural heritage, safeguarding it for humanity.
